Starting with my days of gazing at maps on my wall and playing SimCity as a kid, I have been enthralled by the challenge of piecing together visual data to help make better sense of the world around us.ย
Not only am I a visual learner and communicator, I believe in the inherent simplicity and reliability of maps as an everyday tool in storytelling, problem solving and placemaking.
As a city planner for the City of Riverside, California, I saw myself as just one player among a team of colleagues and consultants, clients, and other stakeholders. In local politics, how one communicates can differ from audience to audience, but the fact-set must remain consistent, and the analysis must remain neutral. I used numerous tools as a city planner, but frequently on that list was our GIS system โ which I used daily to research data and help demonstrate policies in a graphical mapping format.
GIS technology has revolutionized the way we tell stories, solve problems, and make worthwhile places. It allows us to blend data analysis with storytelling, influencing both the physical world and the realm of ideas. I hope my work will lead to a greater academic understanding of these areas and help further my enthusiasm in GIS.

In 2016, I relocated to Omaha with my physician wife after she matched to a radiology residency in Nebraska. Subsequently, we made additional moves to Boston and Philadelphia for additional training. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I became a stay-at-home parent to our toddler while maintaining my American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification and keeping current on local and national city planning projects and issues.ย
